About the data

The directory lists every hotel, guest house and bed and breakfast that appears in two public datasets, matched together by postcode and name and placed into council areas and towns.

Sources

  • Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) and Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS) — the register of food businesses inspected by local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (FHRS) and Scotland (FHIS), published by the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland. We take the business type Hotel / bed & breakfast / guest house: name, postal address, postcode, local authority, latest rating and its date. Licence: Open Government Licence v3.0.
  • OpenStreetMap — places tagged tourism=hotel, guest_house or motel within the United Kingdom: name, address where mapped, website, phone number, star rating where declared. Licence: Open Database Licence (ODbL). © OpenStreetMap contributors.
  • ONS Postcode Directory via postcodes.io — turns each postcode into a local authority, region and country so that both sources land in the same structure. Licence: Open Government Licence v3.0.

How the records are merged

An OpenStreetMap place is merged with a register entry when they share a postcode and their names share most of their significant words. The register supplies the address; OpenStreetMap supplies website, phone and stars. Places that appear only in OpenStreetMap are kept when they carry a postcode and at least a street or town. Places without a postcode are left out — this is a directory with addresses.

What the numbers mean

  • Food hygiene rating — the rating the local authority gave at its last inspection, on a 0–5 scale in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or Pass / Improvement Required in Scotland, with the inspection date. Businesses awaiting inspection or exempt are shown without a rating.
  • Stars — only where the business has declared them on OpenStreetMap; they are not verified against any official scheme.

Known gaps

Registers are only as good as the last update: a business that changed hands or closed may still be listed until its council removes it. Town names come from the address lines and can be a post town rather than the village itself. If a contact detail is wrong, the business’s own website is the place to check.
